  • POFFS and DDT Content

The talk of DDT vs SDK in earlier thread reminded me to bring up the point that as valuable as the offline POFFS is, the lack of updated data bases means that the more recent posts, which contain the greater DDT content, are not available offline.

Is there a chance that an update will be made available? I try to stick with DDT as much as possible and would benefit from having the more recent DDT content available offline.

    Greetings Gary!

I appreciate the comments on POFFS. Unfortunately, I've not received approval to update the databases yet.

      Hi Don,

Well, I'm sure the staff has had their hands full with all of the recent/ongoing revision releases. Perhaps there'll be some breathing time soon.

Based on the what I've seen in the forum rosters late at night, there seems to have been a lot of PM work going on there - appreciated by all of us!

I can't understand the reason why the code posted in the source code forum, at least those with a public licence, couldn't be used offline.

I also refer very often to Poffs, and i find this policy a real pain for the community, especialy after it has been made available for so many years.

          ???

Any code or prose here marked public domain may be used by anyone, any way they want to.

However, there are some steps required to make it convenient to do so....

          1. Getting the data. I assume this can be done 'somehow' since it has been done.
          2. Permission to get and use the data. Here PowerBASIC Inc owns a collective copyright, so permission must be obtained to get and redistribute the information *as a collection*. Since this has occurred in the past, I can only assume PowerBASIC Inc. will grant such permission... and just as with any intellectual work, it is licensed for specific use and subject to some restrictions.
          3. Reformatting the info to make it useful. This, too, has occurred in the past, so I assume it's "do-able."

There's also the requirement to find "someone to actually do it," as magic wands are in short supply this week.

            Greetings Michael!

You've summarized it quite nicely. I've raised my hand to be the magic wand. I'm only lacking permission. I've updated POFFS several times in the past, and I'm hoping that I can distribute the updated databases and not just the updated engine. We'll see how things shake out.

I also found POFFS quite useful in the past. It's really sad that there has been no recent updates...
