PB3.5 And Windows XP

When I use PB3.5 in a DOS box on XP the screen refresh is so slow
that it's barley usable (PB editor) either Window or full screen.

The resulting EXE runs fine either Window or full screen!

I see nobody is going to answer you. Apparently you and I are
only two of the very few who is brave enough to venture into
the unpredictable world of XP. See all the excitement they are
missing. Believe it of not, I still like it.

I have PBdos 3.0 and it seems to be working pretty good in Full
Screen mode, but in a window, it's as slow as pooring honey on a
cold day. I'm running two versions of XP and in the other version
the mouse won't work at all in a window, but the Full Screen still
shows no problems. I have plenty of Processing speed and Memory,
that might be why my Full Screen is working so well.

The best way to run PBDOS (80,25) under XP is don't change the property.

Just type COMMAND/CMD to get the box, then PB, then type SCREEN 12:SCREEN 0 then RUN

or compile a program with SCREEN 12: SCREEN 0 and run it in the DosBox.

In this way, you get a full screen and normal speed and normal color.

Thanks for the replies.

The actual compiled program runs with no problems in window or full screen,
it's just the PB editor that seems to take about 1/2 a second to move the cursor
around the screen.

XP wasn't my choich, it was bundled with the Sony notebook that
I bought myself for Xmas!

I was thinking of using partition magic and installing good on 98SE

These sound like possible Windows configuration issues. If you lose mouse support in a console window, check its properties to make sure "QuickEdit mode" is turned off. As far as cursor speed goes, maybe that's due to a slow keyboard repeat rate? You might check your keyboard settings in Control Panel.

I still have mouse control. The keyboard repeat rate is fine because the compiled program runs as expected.
Its just the editor.

The "SCREEN 12:SCREEN 0" works fine on the desktop but I do not have a Sony Laptop
to test.
I think may be the hardware......

If you can get rid of the XP, please tell me how.

I don't know if you can get rid of it without formatting, but
XP's Help says you can run multiple operating systems with all
past Windows down to 3.1 and MSDOS. To find out more you can
click on Start and Help and enter partition in the search box.

Thought of buying a Laptop too whilst in the States at Christmas.

Was not keen on being one of the first to find out what XP is
not about. "The latest product from the Bugs Factury" one of
your Computer Magazines articles reported

Would it be possible to re-install WIN 98 SE OEM version on a
Laptop with another version of WIN installed ? I got one when I
built my ATHLON 900 Mhz. machine last year.

Otto - the only problem I see with that is that laptops tend to be stuffed full of all kinds of proprietary hardware, so there's no guarantee that Windows 98SE will know what some of the devices inside the laptop are or have the correct drivers for them. (Sony Vaios, from what I understand, are particularly bad about this.)

As long as your intended laptop contains fairly "standard" options - a normal 2-button trackball or pointer, floppy drive, CD-ROM, etc. - you ought to be able to do this. If you're planning to get a laptop with a secondary "scrolling wheel" on the side of the case, or FireWire/IEEE1394 connections, or built-in CD-RW/DVD, etc., you might run into trouble.

I have been using XP on a Sony Vaio for a couple
of months, also have several customers running
PB/DOS app's using XP. XP appears quite stable,
very few problems with crashing.

I've found that the PB IDE works fine, compiles
are speedy.

I tried to setup a dual boot option, but you
CAN NOT load an older operating system, even
with BootMagic. According to Microsoft, you need
to load the older O/S first, then setup the dual
or mutliple boot option.

Personally, I would not go back to Windows 98.
