Is DIR$ not threadsafe? (I can only start it in one thread at a time, or the DIR query gets corrupted by the other thread)

Internally, DIR$ uses one 'handle' regardless of the thread it is started from. Improving DIR$ is already on the "wish list", but I'll ask for another tick to be added for you.
