  • PBDLL6 help file Find tab and Win2000

We just upgraded our machines to Win2000 Professional (German) at work and after reinstalling PB/DLL the Find Tab in the helpfile doesn't work anymore. The tab just displays the gray background. No textbox to key in the search expression or result-listbox is displayed.

Has anyone an idea what could cause this behaviour?

I remember, that I had something like this (but not now).
Try to delete gid-file or reinstall PB/DLL into clean directory.

      Semen,

as I installed it on a clean machine, the later won't help. But deleting the GID file and recreating the index might do the trick. Will try it tomorrow. Thanks for the lead!

Hmm, deleting the GID file didn't help. BTW, the PB/CC help file does the same.

        Any ideas, Ladies and Gentlemen?

Have you tried to delete the .FTS file too (if one exists)? Also, does it work if you double-click the file in Explorer or launch WINHLP32.EXE and select the PBDLL.HLP help file?

I remember having this problem occur suddenly after I installed Win2K (it did not happen immediately after the install, but some weeks afterward), the problem is that I don't remember what I did to fix it - I was running a Beta version of Win2K so I put it down to instability!. All I can remember for certain was installing the HTML Help workshop and I deleted (at least) the .GID files, but I'm not sure of the exact solution that works for me.

You can download my .FTS and .GID from http://ltr.virtualave.net/aa.zip
(HLP - 552781 bytes - and CNT - 11855 bytes, dated July, 2, 1999 06:00 should be the same like your).

              Semen,

thanks for providing the files! It's working now.

              Lance,

A *.FTS file didn't exist, only the hidden *.GID.
hmm...HTML Help Workshop. As the PB/CC helpfile also woes, I'll give that a try. The behaviour is always the them, regardless form where (Explorer, WINHLP32...) I try to launch the helpfile.

                I begin to remember ...
I copied Pb.Hlp to empty directory, renamed it (for example) to 1.hlp, opened this file by Explorer, clicked "Find".
Then renamed 1.gid and 1.fts to PbDll.gid (fts) and copied to Pb-Dll directory.

                  Semen,

you just led me to the solution:
The PBCC.FTS file was not created in the BIN folder, but in the WINNT\HELP folder. The PBCC.GID, however, was created in the PBCC\BIN folder. Copying the *.FTS from the WINNT\HELP to the PBCC\BIN folder solved the problem.

Am I right that in Windows versions prior to Win2000 the *.FTS was created in the same directory the *.HLP was located in? If so, might the ROBOEX32.DLL having trouble to locate the *.FTS if it's not in the same directory as the *.HLP and therefor showing a blank search tab?

A quick test: moving ROBOEX32.DLL and PBCC*.FTS and *.GID out of the directory:
                  - Windows complains about the missing DLL, but shows the standard WinHelp window and apparently the contents of WINNT\HELP\PBCC.HLP in the Find tab...

Strange, isn't it...anyway, thanks Semen and Lance, for putting me on the right track.
