Yes, Lance's code is interesting sample of regions.
As I remember, Jules also posted another cool sample.
I posted a sample how to convert bitmap to region, which allows your dialog to have any form.

But if you seriously think about visual effects, look WinLift.

Some time ago, I saw some code (on this forum I think) demonstrating an odd star-shaped dialog. Can't find it now. Anyone remember what I'm talking about?
