  • win32.hlp exception error

    Hiya.
Dont know if it's me but I have downloaded the win32 help file
    3 times from PB, I have used 3 different OS's (95b, 98se, win2k)
    on 3 different machines.
However every time I load the help file and select FIND, it
gets half way through building the "word list" then raises and
    exception error.
    Anyone else had this ?????

It's certainly unusual to have the problem occur on so many different versions of Windows, unless you simply copied all the WIN32.* files from one to another; in which case you need to search each PC's drive for WIN32.GID and WIN32.FTS, delete them, and then relaunch the help file.

It is important to search the whole machine since some versions of Windows place these dynamically generated files in directories other than where WIN32.HLP is located!

A couple of people have reported success by deleting the two aforementioned files, and then installing HCW (Help Compiler for Windows). One or two other have reported success by installing the platform SDK from www.msdn.microsoft.com

The help file itself is actually created by Microsoft, and PowerBASIC have licensed it for "distribution" to our customers, so any compatibility problems that may be experienced must lie firmly at the feet of the creators of Windows!

I hope this helps... please let us know what your solution is, so we can add it to an FAQ we are putting together on this subject.

    Thanks!

        Neil,

It has always crashed on me and I installed it originally from a
Borland package so I just don't use the word list capacity at all.

I use the file regularly and manage fine without it so if you get
to know your way around it which is a good idea anyway, it will
        not bother you.

        Just another messup from Microsoft.

        Regards,

          Thanx guys.
I will follow up on your ideas.
Lance. Each of the 3 machines and OS's had completely
          separate downloads

            Neil,

I had the same problem. Downloaded and installed successfully on a desktop and built the word list successfully.

Transferred the same file to a laptop which crashed on the word build as you described.

I just copied the whole directory from the desktop to the laptop and it is working perfectly.

            Regards,

            Bern
