  • Problems getting in here..

This whole last week I have had a lot of problems each time I want
to enter these forums. Main entrance, no problems. The Windows and
Programming Forums, etc, lots of problems. Something hangs just
when the page is about to show up and intensive exchange of bytes
    starts with PB's server.

It seems to be something with the writing or reading to/of cookies.
If I clear the diskcache (using Netscape 4.62) I get in without
a problem. If not, I simply don't get in. Once in, no problems.
If I clear the diskcache I lose all "stored info", like previously
visited forums and password, etc. which is a bit annoying.

Don't know if it's just me, or if others also are having the same
kind of problems. Just thought I'd mention it. If just me, I guess
I'm in some kind of trouble here..

I experienced similiar problems last week.
I am also using Netscape. (4.5 though)
My version of Netscape never remembers my PB Forum password, but that is not a big problem. It does seem to remember my NY Times password though.
My only suggestion to PowerBasic or anyone creating forum software would be a mechanism for the user to set the last time visited variable.
That way I could quit my connection and come back to read messages when I have more time.

I have been experiencing this problem on and off for a couple of weeks. Clicking the Netscape "reload page" button usually works.

it has nothing to do with cookies, wrong of me. i think i have
narrowed it down to somewhere around the following line near the
        end of the pages:

Seems like problem is solved. Just sailed in without any reloads
          or stops..

Problem not solved. Bumped into the same rock again the next time
          I tried..

Same problem here. I even downloaded the latest Netscape 4.76. It didn't help.

As Borje said, sometimes it's impossible to get in, even reload won't help. I give up after 10 minutes or so. Next logon my cookie is reset and all the "New" posts have been read mysteriously.

Sometimes the icons for New and Hot Topic seem to be dead as well.

Can't say when this has started, I guess a couple of weeks ago.

            Peter.

The PowerBASIC web server was moved in-house several months ago. It is much faster now than it used to be. Unfortunately, there turned out to be line glitches which cause intermittent data corruption. We have people working on it. I'm not clear on why Netscape is having particular problems, but I have noticed that Netscape is particularly sensitive to malformed HTML, so perhaps that has something to do with it. Please post any details you can and, hopefully, we can get this fixed up soonest.

It only happens on the main forum pages, i.e. the first level below the page that lists all of the forums.

The display stops after the line that says "Replies: All registered users may post replies in this forum.", and the Netscape status bar shows "Connect: Host www.powerbasic.com contacted: waiting for reply.". It flickers as if it is being displayed over and over and over...

Clicking the Reload button usually fixes it, but sometime I have to Reload several times.

Even after the page appears to load correctly, the status bar still says that, flickering, as if some page element still isn't being loaded.

I'm using a high speed, full time connection (cable modem) so phone glitches are not an issue.

Exactly as Eric says, but using a slow modem connection. The strange
thing is that if I empty Netscape's chache just before I enter the
Windows or the Programming Forums, I get in directly. If not, it hangs.

Even stranger is that I always can enter the source code forum without
any problems. Maybe that can be of help in solving the problem.

Using NE 4.08 I occasionally see what Eric reported, but only on the individual forum thread list pages (ie, not the individual thread pages, nor the main forum page).

However, the problem of the "connect"..." flickering occurs when a thread icon in the list contains the animated "hot" GIF. Since the Source Code forum [should!] never have one of these icons, the effect is not noticeable.

I don't have any problems with IE5.01 which I mainly use to access these forums.

Lance, I think you have found it. I turned off graphics and the
problems are gone. Seems like the problem is with the animated
                      red "hot" graphics..

There have been problems with non-animated graphics as well but, this is an excellent point. Most of the problems seem to be with animated graphics, perhaps due to their larger file size. We'll check into that. Thanks for the notions!
