  • Windows 7 and PB8

I just installed the Windows 7 beta and have a couple problems using PBWin 8 now. In the JellyFish Pro editor when I compile a previously existing program I get "compiler log file not found." I had this problem four years ago here and posted about it, but unfortunately don't remember how I finally got it to work. The suggestions were to make sure the "create log file" option was checked in the PB editor, which it is. If I create a new, simple "hello world" program it compiles and runs fine.

In the PB editor I can't compile a previously existing program either. A new program works fine. With a couple of previously existing programs, when I compile and execute I get "compile succeeded" followed by "cannot access resource compiler results." The programs never execute. JellyFish Pro even had a problem saving a file at all.

Anyone else running Windows 7 and having similar problems? I'd hate to wipe the OS again and have to go back to XP just because of this

Thanks in advance for any ideas

Fixed it. It's necessary to set JellyFish Pro and PBWin exe's to admin mode. I set compatibility mode to XP, but that didn't fix it. Setting to admin mode fixed all issues so I'm not sure if both are required or just admin mode. This is fixed by right clicking on the file and choosing the appropriate options.

      Windows 7 BETA right???

I would think the word "BETA" was the key word to where the problems are

That said....I have wondered about installing Windows 7 and what PB versions work or break, but have not had the time to do it myself.
Engineer's Motto: If it aint broke take it apart and fix it

"If at 1st you don't succeed... call it version 1.0"

"Half of Programming is coding"....."The other 90% is DEBUGGING"

"Document my code????" .... "WHYYY??? do you think they call it CODE? "

        Todd,

What's your early opinion of Windows 7? Everything that I read indicates that it blows Vista away. I'm looking forward to upgrading to it when it comes out.

I had Win7 running fine for several weeks then after one of the updates I started getting BSD's. I think it has something to do with the network driver but I can't install the MB drivers because the Gigabyte Installer thinks Win7 is Win98. I found no problems related to PB9/5.

I'm running w7 on the wife's old laptop and it's like vista without the handbrake on. It has had the odd moment where it's seemed to drift off into the distance before coming back and playing nice. Not sure I like the new taskbar though.

Agreed, the new task bar needs some work. I guess they trying to make it more apple-like without it been obviously apple-like. I must say that MS really performed magic on the 'My Computer" explorer. The user modifiable libraries option is really really great. As for drivers what also appeals to me is that most hardware will run on vista drivers. So no waiting for drivers when W7 finally gets released.

W7 even in BETA appears to be quite solid, and definately faster. I've been running vista for quite a while now and based on only a few weeks of playing with W7 I would say its a must-have as soon as it gets released then tossing your Vista installation DVD into the microwave.

You might be able to extract the driver and associated INF file from the installer and add the NIC driver through the Windows Hardware Manager. The driver might even reside outside the installer in it's own directory.

Yes, this was the beta version so I didn't expect things to run perfectly. I have since gotten new hard drives and am installing a fresh Vista and XP dual boot now and leaving the 7 Beta off.

I liked Windows 7 and when the bugs are ironed out I'll be happy to upgrade to it. I had too many problems in the beta version. YouTube videos and so forth would frequently hesitate for several seconds while the audio continues playing, one of the games I tried didn't work properly (even with XP compatibility and admin mode set), and that sort of thing. Again, operating word here is "beta" so I don't expect things to stay like that. It turned out I also had a hard drive problem on my RAID 0, so that might have been throwing a wrench into it too.

One thing I was impressed with was Windows 7 is even better at auto-finding and installing updates than Vista was (and Vista is great at it in my opinion). It even went so far as to find a RAID driver and sound driver without my asking. When it's released and running smoothly I'll be happy to set up a partition for it. It still would not run .hlp files which is the main reason I've shyed away from Vista too. I use the PB .hlp file a lot
