Is there formal training in PowerBasic for Windows available? Preferable in an environment where students can ask questions, either online or in a classroom? Not necessarily free, but not a ridiculous high price either.

Most users of PBwin/Pbcc come from 4 areas. Quick Basic, PowerBasic for DOS, C, or Visual Basic, or a combination of those. In other words most are familiar with many of the basic statements/commands used in PBwin. C users
may see a familiarity with API used in PBwin/PBcc. There are some big differences in Windows programming versus DOS but a familiarity with Basic language programming is critical. Something like Quick Basic or PowerBasic for DOS might be the way to go for someone new to programming to get their feet wet. There are plenty of good books for QuickBasic and PowerBasic for DOS and the PBwin manual (I have the one released with version 6) is good but not what i would give to someone who has never programmed before.
The best thing about PB (and you will hear this over and over) is this forum.
Many of the users are Professional and expert as well as being helpful and unselfish to all who ask for help. Samples of most anything can be found here and the new library that Gary Beene is putting together sounds like a great tool for newbie to expert.
You might find programming classes in basic at a local community college or state tech school if you look for it.

Thank you. I checked with our local community college, the they told me the closest thing they had was "NBW." I had to ask what that was, and she said it was "Net Basic for Windows." I had not heard of it, even tried to find it on the Internet without success, so I wanted to check. I have used PowerBasic for DOS for years, but want to program in Windows some genealogy programming ideas I have.
In addition to the library of source code that I just released, my website has a ~100 page tutorial on PowerBASIC. It's focused on folks new to PowerBASIC but not new to programming in general.
I respond to all inquiries about the site tutorials, but as Fred noted the PowerBASIC forums are noted for their quick responses and for the depth of the answers. This is an excellent place for students to post questions. Just make sure they've done their homework of searching for the answer first - in the forums. The answer to a lot of questions here is a link to the forum thread that has already answered the question.
