Installing to a clean directory is probably not a bad idea, but this update efectively replaces the current version, so you could over write too... it will be up to you.

With all those acres of disk space on your new machine, I'm surprised you are worried!

And you are including a document in the package which details those less than one percent incompatibilities?

I mean, if it's less than one percent, how long can it take to do?

Can't imagine updated compiler, editor and help will cause much problems.
Bet it will save more trouble than cause it. Trust Bob and his Rock'n&Roll
team of developers on that point. Think they know what they are doing..

Well, 99% is good enough for me, Im sure the other 1% can be tweaked into place.
As the next update is effectively a replacement, I'll install it into a new directory on its own, should help avoid conflicts too

PS. Lance - how did you know I had acres of disk space? Ive got ridiculous amounts of drive space now, but I didnt want to mention it to make anyone jealous <big grin> - she's my new baby and its taken me 5 years to save up for her , im a very proud man at the moment ! Also, Powerbasic apps compile in 0.2 seconds now instead of 0.8 seconds! It's phenomenal the time I'm saving, Bob you might wanna check this baby out

Woav, what to do with so much saved time? I would become restless..

A friend of mine has been bugging to buy new equipment for years now.
Tell him my fingers can only type so fast and I still have 2 GB left
on my 4 GB drive. Pictures look better in photo album, video looks better
in VCR/TV and music sounds better in old Stereo. DOOM was last 3D-game
I ever played. I'm an impossible case for a computer salesman..

While Wayne is toting that new suped up turbo charged computer I just finished building my STRICTLY PB machine..

P1/133, 64 megs of ram, ATI All in wonder Pro PCI card, Webcam card installed too....
(It takes pics of me writing code)....

So why the suped up video card in such a small machine?

Well TV and video's might look good on TV, but it's in the OTHER room....
How can I watch TV and code at the same time if I can't have the TV on my computer!!!

Now I can watch TV and write code at the same time...

Can't wait to see the update, feel like one of the many alligators doing the death roll right now waiting ...
(OK Been watching too much Croc hunter with the daughter)...

Hey, lots going on in florida, hope all is OK down there..

Another way to compare: VB code in $1500 new GHz Machine - PB code in $15 old 486 DX33.

Here is a temptation for a DOOM man, get a copy of ZDOOM off the
net and run you old DOOM wad files with it, graphics are a lot
better. I must admit I miss my old box, a 166 pentium with a 4
gig scsi, used to be fun and it was far easier to benchmark on
but my mum is probably the only little old lady in Tasmania with
a full size development box that has everything that opens and
shuts, 128 meg of 72 pin ram, 4 COM ports, 2 printer ports etc ...

I may inherit a 66 meg 486 from a customer who I have just rebuilt
another box for so I can make myself a REAL dos 6.22 box, I have a
spare 6.5 gig IDE handy and 3 128 meg sdram simms so if I can find
a MB that is late enough to take it, I should be able to PLAY in
DOS again.

I have an idea for a virus proof DOS machine that has its DOS version
written on a bootable CD, I have the software for very large ram disks
and it could end up a very useful toy to play with.

Eesh, it seems like everyone is going backwards with their hardware and operating systems except for me... suddenly my new box doesn't feel so special anymore

Steve your virus-proof concept sounds intriguing, how are you accomplishing such a thing, or is the virus-proof part coming from the OS booting from a read-only CD ?

Wayne,

Its a form of childhood reversion, instead of playing with the
latest p48 pentium or Athlon with twin overhead cams, its a
simple reliable world that only crashes if you do something that
makes it crash. I used to enjoy playing with large ram disks as
it tends to make up for the addressing limit of DOS and you can
get some impressive speed in data processing.

Although I rarely use it now, QBASIC is actually fast on a late
machine and the old QB compiler is faster. I may even get time
to play with my DOS version of PB as I never got the chance
before. MASM is a joy to play with in DOS.

You are right about the protection method, its really hard for a
virus to write to a CD so you set up the operating system on CD,
write it to ramdisk, set the environment and paths and voila,
virus free DOS with some grunt.

Still, I think the novelty will wear off quickly.

But I still have my P2/450 w/256 megs of ram and 35 gigs of HD space, and the server itself a P3/500 with 60 gigs of HD space now...

Space I have, warp speed, not quite yet

But I can watch TV and code all day long, so while it may take 2 seconds I can catch teh commercials (ah buggah)...
