Windows 98 SE winsock.dll 4.10.1998?

Would someone using Windows 98 SE please check
the properties of their winsock.dll to see if
their is a version other than 4.10.1998?
Trying to see if \windows\hosts needs to be used
with all versions of Windows 98 to connect using
TCP with an IP address.

whenever error 57 is received connecting to an IP address.

Whoa, hang on there a second...
Double check your Wsock32.dll, Winsock is for 16 bit compatability if I am not mistaken, but from past experience the Wsock32.dll is the one you should be concerned about (???)


Also, Using the hosts file is not your is sue, Windows ALWAYS uses the hsot file BEFORE it sends out an ARP packet to find the IP address for the name given...

So, test it, put powerbasic.com as 127.0.0.1, close your browser, and then reopen it and try to get back here, you won't......

It's at the 4th layer if I'm not mistaken, not at the application layer...

for tcp:
CWBLHD (Can We Buy Large Hard Drives)
for netbios:
LHDCWBS (Large Hard Drives Collectively Will Be Supported)..

Cache,Wins,B-Node, L (?), Hosts, DNS

That's the order it is done in....Not sure if I have the acronyms right etc...

PS, except where NAT is being used, ie in my home network i use 192.168.10.x, and www.tngbbs.com is set in my hosts file to 192.168.10.2 except that in DNS itself it is actually set to another address...
That's the ONLY time you should *have* to modify the hosts file

Mike,

I had the same problem with not being able to use raw IP addresses
instead of using domain names. My problem was fixed when I
installed Client for Microsoft Networking.

Thank you very, very much.
In addition, I re-installed Microsoft client
on all terminals on a network and they all now
accept TCP. Wish I had known this a year ago.

I saw that issue as well when I worked for a huge software vendor, but not all places were happy about doing that because they were still hot on the Novell side of the house...

Good catch tho, seems weird to have to install a client for MS Networking, what other kind of networking is there now? hehe...I know the novell side is still there but 2000 takes care of all that for ya...

I still have the problem, but only on Win98 first edition. I never noticed that win client fixes it on the other os's, because I have it installed on every computer in my office. Thanks for the info, Clay, maybe it's a configuration issue with the windows client on win98 1sted.

Don,

I hope you can solve your problem with the 1st Edition. I've never
owned that OS, went right from Win95 OSR-2 to Win98 SE. I'll
be very interested, as I'm sure will other BBS members, to hear
what you come up with that fixes the problem.

Have you tried an updated Microsoft Internet Explorer? Win98 and
MSIE are closely intertwined, and maybe one of the system files
that an MSIE upgrade would install will fix the issue, maybe when
combined with the Client for Microsoft Networking installation?
