Getting data into a GIS system

I have a list of lat/lon coordinates, and I want to create a GIS-industry-standard shape file. Is anybody here familiar with the general process of creating a shape file from raw data? Specifically, I need to create a shape file than can be used with ArcView GIS 3.0, which is the lowest common denominator in this project.

Thanks, Sergio! That will be very helpful in a later stage of the project. But what I'm looking for right now is an applet, import wizard, or something like that, so I guess I should not have posted this in the Programming forum. I'll re-post in the Cafe'...
