  • What If… The Intel X86S architecture become True?

Good morning dear PB programmers! I have a question, on the assumption that what we see here (in the link below) as a possible operating scenario might become reality: would our compilers still work if Intel processors were only 64-bit, entrusting virtual machines with the execution of legacy software?
    Greetings from Germany
    Mimmo
PC computing rests heavily on Intel Architecture processors with an enormous installed base, and cloud computing is synonymous with Intel Architecture.

As long as Windows still includes the Wow64 sub-system, it's not an issue. Most of us are running on an Intel 64bit processors now.

Supported by section "Legacy Operating Systems on 64-Bit Mode-Only Architecture" of article refered to in post 1.

      Cheers,

Ashley, that section refers to "deliver a solution to emulate features required to boot legacy operating systems."

The relevant part of the paper that answers the OPs question is:
By exploring a 64-bit mode-only architecture, other changes that are aligned with modern software deployment could be made. These changes include:
        • Using the simplified segmentation model of 64-bit for segmentation support for 32-bit applications, matching what modern operating systems already use.
        (i.e. WOW64)

Thank you very much for your answers! Especially for the clarifications given by Stuart! So, long live Wow64!!!
