  • PwrDev pBWin804 Help Support

    Hi Edwin,

I tried to log into the HelloBasic forums and post but seem to be unable to do so.

The 14 Oct 2007 release of PwrDev does not pick up my PowerBASIC 8.04 .CHM help file. Instead it loads the 8.03 .hlp.

    Any clues?

    Thanks,

    Dave

It's ok you contact me here but also a pm over here is fine (just pointing it out for others as well).

The newest setup is using the newer helpfile.
But for PB/WIN only at this time, somewhere this week i'll manage for the CC compiler as well.

To access the website download area you can use the 'forgot password' option.
Or send me a pm or so.

If you need more help, let me know.

    Edwin,

It seems you are not a member of the HB forum, shall i subscribe you?

Most buyers don't want to participate the forum, but for the upcomming users i tend to subscribe them anyway.

        Hi Edwin,

The 14 Oct 2007 version is the one I have installed already, and it does NOT load the PBWin 8.04 .CHM help file, it loads the old 8.03 .HLP. I just did some tests using Process Explorer to see what path that the Windows .hlp viewer uses for the PBWin.hlp file. Even though I have the compiler set for 8.04 in the project properties, PwrDev is loading the .HLP file from my PBWin803 install.

How exactly does PwrDev decide where to get the .HLP (and hopefully soon .CHM) help file? It's got to be some kind of "Automagical" code that looks at the compiler setting and searches for the directory etc.

I think I would prefer some kind of option where you set the path in a text box as an option of some ind. I never have liked very much any kind of "Automagical" code that finds the right file for you.

Please do subscribe me to the PwrDev forum. I tried to do that online myself but couldn't get it to work for me. By the way, 'My Place' is already working for meand I can download files OK. I just can't log into the forum.

Hmm, it simply uses the compiler's folder to look up pbwin.chm
On error it uses the .hlp version.

Both the PowerBASIC helpfile menu under HELP and right mouse on keyword (like 'long') should invoke the new helpfile.
It is possible a keyword is not found but should still show the chm version.

I guess there is something going wrong anyway.
So far i have not included support for CC so it's currently for PB/WIN only.

Please check the diags dialog and see the folder it looks for (compiler).
Make sure you use a newly created project (to avoid using compilersettings from an existing project)
Are you sure PwrDev sees the new compiler?
Check the log-version at the end of the compile.

OK, here is the diag output. It seems that the PB update 803-804 may not have updated the registry on my system for some reason, so PwrDev is guessing the 8.03 registry entry. It would be nice to have that all humanly reviewable/settable.

              Edwin,

OK, I got the .CHM help working. I just remembered that after upgrading my PBWIN803 to 804 I renamed the install directory, so the entry in the registry for 8.04 was pointing to the old install directory (which I recreated so I could have 803 active as well). I just updated the registry entry for the 8.04 install to the correct path and now PwrDev opens the .CHM like it should.

Thanks for your fast replies here and for caring about your customers.

See on the website's faq: "I just installed PwrDev, why can't it find the compiler?"

                You should run PBEDIT once.
However, i don't see why it fails to find the helpfile yet.

                It clearly shows:
                Compilername: WIN8.04
                Compiler: C:\PB\PBWin803\Bin\PBWIN.EXE

Note that you have updated v803, therefore several items point to the 803 folder and settings.

What does the log give you for compiler version(!)
The PB compiler *still* does not have a resource with build.
Therefore PwrDev can only guess it's version.
