This tool is freeware, you can use it to combine icons into one ico file.

The latest version also supports png icons under XP.
This requires gdiplus to be present, if not, the icon will simply not show.
If not shown it doesn't mean you can't select it, selection goes on a binary level and the icon does not need to be created at all.

    Have fun...

    Iconbrowser - Great Tool

    Hello,

Great Tool. Could be used to prepare imagelist for the Toolbar. The ability to select the size you want on the fly makes it really cool.

    Kind regards,

      Haha, i am afraid not
When you use icons of the same size, Windows can not determine which one to choose.

The imagelist part you mention is a PwrDev feature which loads each icon on a binary level.

      Thanks for your kind words.

        A browse function perhaps?

That's nice, thank you. Is there any way to have it search the entire computer for DLL and EXE files that are known to contain icons? There are a lot of files that contain icons, but I never know where they are.

When I use Change Icon on one of the shortcuts on the the Desktop it says the icon is currently coming from
        %SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll
but I don't even know where that is.

%SystemRoot% is an evironment variable and on my computer set to: C:\WINDOWS

If you enter (in any addressbar) %SystemRoot%\system32 you'll navigate to: C:\WINDOWS\system32

This tool does not grab the icons from inside dll's but there are tools like reshacker which can do that for you.

There is a new release of this tool.
You can now see a preview of the icon.
Some sizes are kept smaller to fit the listbox.
The preview control will let you show the icons somewhat larger.
Great to take a peek at the Vista type of icons which can be 256x256.

It can now be populated by drag and drop.
Drag an ico file into the dialog and the left control is filled.

Look at the clarity of png icons(!)
