  • Named Pipes / Shared Memory

    Hi
Normally I always use TCPIP as my client protocol. Can SQL_Tools work with Named Pipes / Shared Memory? Looks like only the 32 bit version of SQL Native Client 11.0 works, right?

I recall being able to use LOCAL as the server name when app and sql server are on same machine, right?

Is there a LOCAL equivalent for SQL Express?

Make the name "localhost" (without quotes). It is in the "hosts" (again no quotes) file, (That file name has no extension (dot something.))

LOCALHOST is IP 127.0.0.1 It is recommended not to remove this line from HOSTS file; though adding entrys for other fixed IP devices (especially local LAN) can be useful. ((just in case - 127.0.0.1 is loop-back IP))

So yes, use LOCALHOST when app and server are on the same machine. (Or, 127.0.0.1 if you want IP instead of name.)

I'll leave the SQL Express specific part of question. (but if it does IP networking the name or number should work.)

    Cheers,
    Dale

If you can configure an ODBC driver to connect that way, then Yes. So probably No.
